As a volunteer for Junior Achievement of Mid-Michigan, I taught personal finance to local high school students. This program equips students with real-life skills to prepare them for financial independence after graduating.
Implementing the program consisted of weekly visits to the classroom, presenting to the students orally and using a variety of material including video, slides, and facilitating hands-on activities. Over the course of six weeks, students learned about income and employment, budgeting, savings, credit and debt, and more.
The opportunity to volunteer with Junior Achievement was rewarding for many reasons. First, it pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me build confidence in public speaking. More importantly, I treasured being able to provide these students with resources that are so vital for success after high school. It is my hope that the students with whom I was fortunate enough to interact are able to call on these skills as they enter real-world situations in the future.
